Updated: Feb 17, 2020

"Phonics" is a buzz word in learning to read, but what does it really it really mean?

Phonics is defined as “a method of teaching elementary reading and spelling based on the phonetic interpretation of ordinary spelling.” Let’s break that down to the underlying components necessary to read. We first start with letter identification and phonemic awareness. Letter identification is the ability to name all the letters and identify consonants verse vowels. Phonemic awareness is all auditory. It’s the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words and to hear individual sounds in words. These individual sounds are called phonemes. Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds at the phoneme, word and syllable level of language. We need all these tools to read: letter identification, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness and phonics.
